St. Louis Cardinals Leading Texas Rangers in World Series
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Texas Rangers in game one of the World Series Wednesday.
Allen Craig, Cardinals substitute batter, helped the team win 3-2 in the first of seven games in the championship series. Craig substituted starting pitcher Chris Carpenter after an elbow injury caused the starter to leave after the sixth inning.
The substitute pitcher said he was confident in his team’s ability to do well.
“I don't know what everyone else has been thinking about our team," Craig told the MLB website. "But we know what we can do. We've just got to come out and keep doing it."
C.J. Wilson, Rangers’ starting pitcher, was less confident in his performance Wednesday. The pitcher was upset with his team’s loss.
"It stinks. It stinks," Wilson said, according to CNN. "I'm here to win. I'm not here to lose. I'm not here to give up runs. I don't work all year to have these negative press conferences afterwards.”
David Freese, Cardinals’ third baseman, admitted that winning games in the postseason is a lot harder for teams.
"When you get in the postseason, you have to win games in so many ways," Freese said, according to MLB networks. “Not every game is going to be the same. Teams that win 90, 95, 100 games, they win ballgames different ways the entire year."
Michael Young, first baseman for the Rangers, admitted that the competition played well in the first game of the championships.
"They made pitches when they had to, that was pretty much it," Young said, according to MLB.com. "Carpenter looked sharp, and their bullpen threw well."
However, Craig said his team was more than just a few role players.
"We have a well-rounded team," Craig said, according to MLB.com. "We've been playing good 'D,' the starting pitching has been pretty good. The bullpen has been good. And we've been getting timely hits. I don't know what everyone else has been thinking about our team, but we know what we can do. We've just got to come out and keep doing it."
Game two will take place in St. Louis Thursday.
