'The Croods' Tops Box Office Charts With $44.7 Million (VIDEO)
"The Croods" took home the top box office slot during its premiere weekend, bringing in $44.7 million in the United States and $108 million worldwide. The newest animation from DreamWorks is off to a great start and could be headed for a sequel if the film continues to enjoy such success.
"The Croods" tells the story of the caveman-like family who must learn to adapt to the more modern surroundings after nature takes its toll on their home. The characters are voiced by big-name Hollywood icons including Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds.
Cage plays the fearful father, Ugg, who wants nothing more than to protect his family from harm. Unfortunately, that safety often comes at a high cost of freedom and his beliefs are challenged when his "safe" cave is destroyed. He is suddenly forced to find a new home for his family and learn new ways to provide for them.
Thankfully he has the help of Reynolds' Guy, who is clearly from a more modern world. His sense of exploration and the hope of "getting to tomorrow" always keep him moving and trying new things. Guy manages to teach Ugg what he needs to survive and helps him find a new place for the family.
"To come in at the $45 million mark, ahead of 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which was another terrific movie from DreamWorks Animation, is a great start to the spring holiday," Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution, told CBS.
Even though the film deals with cavemen-like characters, the movie's writer and producer wanted to ensure that anyone could relate to them.
"There are times when you want to indulge in the dummy caveman world, and we want lava, tar, and other things that we wanted to work against. What's cool about this film is that we have a lot of female characters. Having so many female characters, we could make the film a lot broader," Chris Sanders said at a press conference.
Hopefully if there is a sequel, Ryan Reynolds will get his wish for his character Guy, which is simply "a shirt." Cage said he would like to see the Crood family in outer space, which would be a combination of "The Flintstones" and "The Jetsons," both classic cartoons.
