'The Good Wife' Spoilers: 'Plethora' of Options for Alicia Now, Julianna Margulies Says

"The Good Wife" managed to pull off one of the most significant deaths in recent history with the death of lead character Will Gardner. This week's episode focused on the rest of the cast learning of Will's death, but actress Julianna Margulies gave viewers a sneak peek about what the rest of the season has in store.

Will's death has opened a "plethora" of possibilities for her character, Alicia Florrick. "Of course there's going to be this hole in her life. But it's about how she fills it, and how she starts to question her choices: 'Why am I doing this and why am I representing these [expletive].' I think anything important that happens in someone's life is a game-changer, and it makes you, hopefully, a better person for it. I think you'll see this tremendous loss for her, but the choice she makes from then on are incredibly careful and mostly about her," Margulies said at a special screening of the episode.

Charles opened up about his character's epic exit on the "Late Show with David Letterman" just one day after the world learned of Will's death.

"Yeah, we've known this since last year," Charles said. "It's been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career, but at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was just ready to kind of move on. I think it was great for the show and also I think was a proper goodbye to the character, so that was special."

Show creator Michelle King said that she could think of no better way to say goodbye to Charles' character than death, which allows Alicia to move on in a new way and go a different direction.

"It was sad for us, the thought of this character we love dying, but it felt like anything else would have been a little too easy. We all would have wanted Alicia to have Will had he been only across the country or disbarred. What this also gave us was something more interesting for Alicia, to see the next step, which is what the show is always about," King said at the screening.

"The Good Wife" airs Sunday nights on CBS.
