'The Sound of Music' Reactions to Carrie Underwood's Impossible Role

"The Sound of Music" televised remake hit the airwaves live Thursday night and millions of people tuned in as Carrie Underwood took on the role of Maria von Trapp.

Tackling the same beloved role that made Julie Andrews famous back in 1956 was no easy task, and while Underwood's singing wowed audiences, her acting fell dead flat in the television event.

Twitter was ablaze with viewer's reactions ranging from bitterly disappointed to mildly enthusiastic during the entire three-hour show, including many fans who are staunchly loyal to the original "Sounds of Music" movie starring Andrews.

"It bothers me because I know every last word and they have kind of ad-libbed it," Twitter user Marina posted.

Samantha added, "Julie Andrews is NOT to be outdone or copied."

Nevertheless, several celebrities voiced support and praise of Underwood's Maria portrayal.

"Loving the makeover Maria! (you tart) #SoundOfMusic," actress Anna Kendrick posted.

Underwood's friend and fellow country music star Miranda Lambert wrote, "Wow! The Sound of Music Live was awesome. @carrieunderwood was unbelievable! I can't imagine the work that went into that. Such a talented cast!"

Despite some of the unforgiving reviews, Underwood said she "couldn't be more proud" of last night's "The Sound of Music."

"Glory to God tonight," the singer added to Twitter after the show. "What a tough thing to pull off and we did it! I am so blessed!!!"

Earlier in the day, just before the show, Underwood braced herself for the reactions to come. However, the country music star remained positive and promised to do her best.

"I just want to say before the craziness starts… I am truly honored to be in #TheSoundOfMusic This is an exciting/moving project…." Underwood posted to Twitter on Dec. 5.

"I have been surrounded by such an amazing cast and crew for the past 2 months and I will be sad when I'm not coming to set tomorrow…" The singer added. "I hope, above all, that we are joyous in what we're doing and that I am giving it all that I've got. Thank you all for the love and support."
