This week in Christian history: Billy Graham holds integrated crusade, Thomas Chalmers, Moody renamed
Thomas Chalmers born – March 17, 1780
This week marks the anniversary of when Thomas Chalmers, a Presbyterian minister, social reformer and first moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, was born.
A native of Anstruther, Chalmers was ordained in 1803 and wrote several theological works. He also worked to help fight poverty, especially while serving a church in Glasgow.
“Receiving permission from the city to administer all the charitable funds donated in the churches, he had great success in ameliorating the condition of the poor while reducing costs,” noted Britannica.
“Chalmers was more concerned with the solution of human problems than with theological doctrines, and he sought to apply Christian ethics to economic issues.”
