'Words cannot convey the sorrow': All 14 people killed in New Orleans terrorist attack identified
Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux
Aspiring nursing student Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux snuck out with a cousin and a friend to go to New Orleans for New Year's Eve. The 18-year-old graduate of Harrison Central High School was among the pedestrians killed in the terror attack, her mother, Melissa Dedeaux, confirmed.
"She was a sweet person. She was a people person," Dedeaux told USA Today about her daughter.
The high school graduate was one of six children, and the victim’s mother described her daughter as “mama and daddy's favorite.”
Dedeaux said that her daughter was an "outgoing, very smart girl" who helped care for her 1-year-old sister. The victim’s mother also warned others against traveling without their parents’ permission.
"Let your parents know where you are because it could be you," she said.
The Telegraph reported that Nikyra Cheyenne had traveled to New Orleans from Mississippi with a friend and a cousin to celebrate before starting a nursing course at Blue Cliff College in the new year.
The victim’s friend, Zion Parsons, told local news outlet Nola.com that the group decided to travel to New Orleans “on a whim.” The trio arrived in the city around 2 a.m. and later heard a commotion after leaving Voodoo Chicken & Daiquiris on Bourbon Street near Bienville Street.
