Who has Trump picked for his cabinet? Here are 9 of his nominees
Matt Gaetz
The most controversial nomination announced by Trump so far involves former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. After Trump introduced Gaetz as his pick to serve as his attorney general in an X post last Wednesday, Gaetz resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives.
Gaetz’s sudden resignation leaves his heavily Republican-leaning seat in Florida’s 1st Congressional District open. It will remain vacant until a special election takes place.
Trump vowed that “Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly shattered faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”
According to Trump, “Matt will root out the systemic corruption at DOJ, and return the Department to its true mission of fighting Crime, and upholding our Democracy and Constitution. We must have Honesty, Integrity, and Transparency at DOJ. Under Matt’s leadership, all Americans will be proud of the Department of Justice once again.”
First elected in 2016, Gaetz has emerged as one of Trump’s strongest defenders. Last year, he led an ouster of the then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. In addition to opposition from Senate Republicans, Gaetz’s nomination has also faced criticism from advocacy groups concerned about the allegations that he had sex with a minor. Gaetz strongly denies all charges of wrongdoing.
