Will the Next iPhone be Called iPhone 5 or iPhone 6?

The recent release of iPhone 4S has had many Apple enthusiasts wondering whether the next iPhone will be called iPhone 5 or iPhone 6.

Many were expecting to see the iPhone 5 released in 2011.

However Apple opted to release the iPhone 4S, which has maintained the chassis of its predecessor, the iPhone 4, but has undergone major software updates, which some propose were meant for the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 4S stands as the fifth-generation of iPhone.

This has led many to believe that Apple will not call its successor iPhone 5, but possibly iPhone 6.

Calling the next Apple smartphone iPhone 6 would match up with its sixth-generation place in the iPhone product line.

The Christian Post previously reported on Apple's decision to forgo making an "iPhone 2" and opting to call its second-generation smartphone the iPhone 3G, which was named for the network on which is runs.

After the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS was released.

Many suggest the "S" in this name stands for "speed," as Apple advertised the iPhone 3GS as having a new processor that made it up to twice as fast as its predecessor.

Then came the iPhone 4, which stood as the fourth-generation of iPhone.

Many propose that Apple decided to not drastically change the name of the current iPhone due to the fact that it has not had any updates in its hardware.

Rumors suggest that the iPhone 4S was dedicated to the late Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple, detailing that the name can be read as "iPhone 4 Steve."

Some believe that the "S" stands for "shutter," referring to the iPhone 4S's highly efficient, 8MP camera.

Some also propose that the "S" stands for "Siri," referring to the iPhone 4S's primary feature, the artificial intelligence system, Siri.

Commentators conclude that it would not be plausible for Apple to call its sixth-generation iPhone, iPhone 5.

There should be an enumerable amount of speculation surrounding the name of the next iPhone as its earliest proposed release date, summer 2012, approaches.
