Spokesperson for the Baltimore-Washington airport Jonathan Dean said an officer helped the woman deliver the child on the floor of a restroom in Concourse D, according to The Associated Press.

Dean added that Maryland Transportation Authority Police as well as the airport’s fire and rescue department responded to a call relating to a woman in labor around 2 p.m. Sunday.

Following the child’s delivery, the woman and baby were transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. The mother’s name has not been released.

Not all expectant mothers make it to the hospital before delivering their babies as displayed by the incident at BWI. The latest statistics on births in the United States indicate that over four million babies are born each year, but the how, when, and where they arrive can vary.

According to statistics, the most popular day of the week for women to deliver their babies is on Tuesday. Monday marks the second-most deliveries, and Sunday is the slowest day in hospital delivery rooms, with 35.1 fewer births than average.

In 2010, more newborns arrived in September than any other month. August, June, and July marked the second, third, and fourth most popular birthday months, in that order.

States with the most births in 2010 were California, Texas, and New York, in descending order. Vermont had the lowest number of births, followed by Wyoming, North Dakota, and District of Columbia.

“Birth rate” defines the estimate of the average number of births a group of women will have over their lifetime. The birth rate is down three percent from 2010 according to babycenter.com, and has been declining every year since 2007. Additionally, the number of births is down in recent times, with the count at 4,055,000 – 7 percent less than the all-time high of 4,316,233 births in 2007.
