Zooey Deschanel Reveals She Was Bullied
'Girls Spit in My Face'
Zooey Deschanel may be experiencing a wave of publicity and favor in the public eye right now, but that hasn’t always been the case. In a new interview, Deschanel has revealed that she was bullied in school.
Deschanel is on the cover of Allure magazine and offers a very personal view of her life and experience of being bullied. “Girls spat in my face; people were so mean to me, I’d cry every day,” she said. Even now Deschanel finds herself fearful of being bullied by the media and public. “I can’t go on Gawker. I actually think the writing is really funny, but there is a chance that somebody is undercutting me.”
She is currently starring in Fox TV’s “New Girl,” which features a lovable, self-described “dork” trying to make her way in the world. Deschanel told reporters, “This is me…if there’s any character that I’d want to play for ever and ever, it’s this one.”
Fans of the show champion its quirkiness; for example, lead character Jess (Deschanel) often breaks into song out of the blue. While many shows have featured female characters trying to fit in with male co-stars and becoming more boyish, “New Girl” makes no qualms about Jess being a girly-girl. Deschanel herself has stated, “I don’t know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking ‘I need to act like a man’ or ‘I need to tone it down to be successful.’”
“New Girl” was nominated for a Golden Globe, and Deschanel nominated for a Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) award. In addition to her TV show Deschanel is the founder of HelloGiggles.com, a website with all types of news and information for women.
