Alex Rodriguez Injures Quadriceps: Could He be Waiting for Suspension?

With Alex Rodriguez set to make his New York Yankees debut tonight, a set back due to a quadriceps injury yesterday in a rehab assignment will have him shelved indefinitely.

The Yankees will have to petition the league for more rehab time because he is past his allotted amount, so for now he will be on the disabled list.

"I am extremely disappointed with the results of the MRI and am hoping to be back as soon as possible," said Rodriguez Sunday through a spokesperson. "[I will] continue with my goal of coming back and helping the Yankees win a championship."

The ball player felt a tug on his left leg while playing for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and was flown back to New York for tests.

Is unclear how long the set back will keep him out.

The Yankees third baseman made an appearance on New York sports station WFAN last week, where he told host Mike Francesca that he expected to be back today, which would mean his rehab assignment was successful.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman confirmed A-Rod's comments to ESPN New York.

"That's the hope. Let's get through the weekend and see where he is at and see if he is major league able," he had initially said.
A-Rod's replacements at third have not fared to well at the plate, as combined numbers put them below a batting average of .220 with just a .295 on base percentage. Although A-rod's numbers have not been too stellar in the minors at just 5 for 28 with a home run.

In other news, Rodriguez has been linked to the Biogenesis human growth hormone scandal, and could face an MLB suspension of 100 games soon.

ESPN reported that as many as 20 player suspensions could be occurring in the days following the All-Star break. The most notable names were Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez. Others on the list were: Nelson Cruz, Bartolo Colon, Melky Cabrera, Jesus Montero, Jhonny Peralta and Everth Cabrera.

Some sports experts have suggested Rodriguez is just buying his time until the verdict is reached on whether he will be suspended or not.
