Android 4.4 KitKat Update Rolling Out for Both Nexus 7 Models and Nexus 10

The Android 4.4 KitKat update began rolling out for the Nexus 7 12/13 models and the Nexus 10 last night.

The announcement came through Android's Twitter account yesterday.

"Starting today, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013) and Nexus 10 will be getting a tasty update to Android 4.4 KitKat," read the tweet.

The next two devices that are scheduled to receive the software officially are the cellular versions of the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4.

"Stay tuned, Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 versions with mobile data will be getting the update soon!" added Android on Google +.

The software has already unofficially rolled out to various devices. ROMs have been developed to allow most smartphone users to have access to the newest software. However, any custom firmware should be downloaded and installed with caution as they could void warranties.

In terms of official roll outs, many high-end devices such as the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 are still waiting to upgrade to Android 4.3, JellyBean, so those handsets probably will not receive KitKat until sometime next year.

Android 4.4 KitKat was introduced by Google earlier this month alongside the brand new Nexus 5 smartphone.

The software is designed to be installed on a wide range of devices including older models that only have 512MB RAM.

"KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications," said Google on its developer's website.

The software is designed to protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM. Android will launch the services serially, or in small groups in order to avoid peak memory demands.
