Boston Red Sox Roster News: David Price Gets Lucrative Seven-Year Contract
AL Cy Young runner-up David Price got the kind of contract every pro baseball player would love to have after the Boston Red Sox reportedly offered the pitcher a whopping $217 million deal for seven years. This deal is making the rounds in pro sports discussions because once it is made official it'll be the largest contract to be signed by a pitcher in the history of the league.
But if there is one who deserves this kind of a figure, it has to be the left-hander Price, who was AL's best pitcher three years ago and was a runner-up a couple of times in a young professional career. His averages currently stand at 3.09 ERA and 1,372 strikeouts in 104 wins.
Price's decision to go with Boston was expected because the team is now run by Dave Dombrowski, serving as the new president of baseball operations. Dombrowski actually was Detroit's general manager before the transfer to Boston. By looking at the pitcher's movement as a player in the past couple of years, it is quite clear that Dombrowski has something to do with it.
Before Detroit, Price played a bulk of his career with Tampa Bay. He eventually landed with the Tigers after getting traded in 2014. His stint there was brief though after he was traded again to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he helped the team reach the postseason, something they haven't done so in roughly 20 years.
As the newest member of the Red Sox, Price will carry the huge responsibility of turning the team's fortunes after finishing dead last in AL East in the past two seasons. It's actually a very ironic twist for this baseball club that actually won the World Series in 2013.
With Dombrowski on board, Boston's future looks brighter than it was a season ago. The new head honcho quickly tapped the rebuilding mode button by signing Price and traded for closer Craig Kimbrel from San Diego.
Price will be joining a quality rotation for the Red Sox that includes Wade Miley, Clay Buchholz, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Rick Porcello.
