Dwyane Wade Reunites With LeBron James as He Signs Deal With the Cavs
Two superstars who once formed one of the most formidable tandems in recent history have reunited.
NBA veteran guard Dwyane Wade officially joined the Cleveland Cavaliers after clearing his waivers on Wednesday, as reported by ESPN. Wade, a 12-time All-Star, parted ways with the Chicago Bulls after both agreed to a contract buyout last Sunday. With Wade heading to the Cavs' fold, he will again be partnered with former teammate and four-time league MVP LeBron James.
NBA.com reported that Wade released a statement on Wednesday announcing his decision to move to Cleveland. "There's no better place to be right now to continue to play and compete at the highest level," posted Wade on his social media accounts. Wade agreed to a one-year, veterans minimum deal of $2.3 million with the Cavs.
"Cleveland believes in my talents and what I can bring to a championship contender both as a player and leader. I look forward to reuniting and playing alongside my brother LeBron. We've already won two championships together and I hope we get a third," the 35-year-old superstar added.
Wade and James go way back when they first entered the league in 2003. Wade was the Miami Heat's fifth pick in the 2003 draft class while James was selected first by the Cavaliers. The two would cross paths countless times in the hardcourt as opponents until James left Cleveland in 2010 to join Wade and the Heat.
With Wade's addition, the chances of the Cavs returning to the NBA Finals in June will further be boosted. Apart from teaming up with James, Wade will also play alongside former league MVP Derrick Rose and star point guard Isaiah Thomas. Thomas was recently acquired by the Cavs from the Boston Celtics in a blockbuster deal that sent Kyrie Irving to Bean Town.
The Cavs and the Celtics will face each other on opening night on Oct. 17.
