Gun Violence Reduction and Resolution: A Battle for CDC and the Medical Society

CDC and Its Fight Against Gun Violence

Gun violence has been a continuous pressing issue and recurring crimes connected to such creates greater rage among Americans. On the other hand, public health officers' attention has been continuously engaged as they fail to address this issue at hand. But this story changes as the public health officers finally take notice on this matter.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has called for help to fund their firearms injury prevention program. Unfortunately, congress brushed this plea for funding, and even if there were succeeding bills and amendments made by the National Institute of Health, the funding became a challenge as well.

Though the fight seems to be dwindling down on the side of the CDC, CDC director Thomas Frieden just couldn't give up the fight. And with the voice and help of the medical community supporting CDC on their venture, CDC director Thomas Frieden has been encouraged to not withdraw. Among the many organizations supporting CDCs act are the American Medical Association, National Physicians Alliance, Doctors for America and American Public Health Association who recognizes and identifies this matter at hand as a public health crisis.

According to an interview with Leana Wen, Commissioner of Health in Baltimore, "Since gun violence follows the same pattern as an infectious disease, spreading from person to person, we must prevent the spread and intervene as early as possible. We should diagnose the cause and implement necessary treatments to prevent further tragedy."

In the recent statistics release, more or less 33,000 people in a year were killed through gun violence in America. Though violence involving guns and firearms are related to terrorism, mass shootings and killed police officers, nearly 2/3 of the deaths are attributed to gun deaths through suicides and homicides.

This matter is being pushed as a public health crisis for the reason that clinical researchers believes that they can help identify certain patterns and formulate preventive strategies to reduce level of gun related death.

One of the alarming and arguable reasons behind the failure to make these proposals into reality is the firm association of NRA (National Rifle Association) with congress and state legislatures. But medical professionals are also strong believers of their advocacies and they believe that they too, have a social and professional responsibility in protecting the public.
