'Homeland' Season 5 has a German setting and award-winning German cast

"Homeland" Season 5 returns to television screens on October 4. Carrie Mathison, now no longer with the CIA, is working for a German philanthropist. The action has shifted to Germany and the season has some of the best actors playing major characters.

Most of the espionage movies and television shows have been concentrating on the US, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Middle East. Season 5 of "Homeland" is going to be a refreshing change as viewers will get to see Carrie in a completely different setting – Berlin, Germany. It almost seems a return to the Cold War era, Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie.

Carrie Mathison, played by the Emmy winning actress Claire Danes, has now apparently been domesticated and lives with her baby girl in Germany. She has a new home there and a new employer - millionaire and philanthropist Otto During of the During Foundation. Carrie is the head of security at the foundation.

Two things draw her out of her self-imposed exile. The first is when her boss, the philanthropist, asks her to accompany him to a war zone in Lebanon. In Berlin, she gets entangled in trouble when an American journalist, played by Sarah Sokolovic, asks Carrie for help in identifying the hackers at the CIA's Berlin Station. She asks Carrie to verifying data files that some Germans have hacked.

So expect a lot of Berlin before action shifts to Lebanon.

With the German setting, "Homeland" has roped in a stellar German cast to play major characters.

First is Sebastian Koch, 53, who is a German television and movie actor. He has appeared in the 2007 Academy Award winning film, "The Lives of Others"' and "A Good Day to Die Hard" where he was Bruce Willis' foe. He has won many major German film awards.

The other German is Alexander Fehling, rumoured to be playing Carrie's lover in the upcoming season. He is a German theatre and film actor. He was also in the 2009 Quentin Tarantino film, "Inglorious Basterds" where he portrayed Staff Sgt. Wilhelm.

Lastly, there is Miranda Otto, an Australian actress who has done critically acclaimed supporting roles in "The Thin Red Line" and 'What Lies Beneath." Fans may remember as Eowyn, the woman who slew the Witch-King in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
