Katie Holmes Divorce: Why She Really Left Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's recent divorce announcement undoubtedly shocked many of their fans, and critics continue to speculate what exactly went wrong in their marriage.

The couple, who wed in November 2006 after just one year of dating, has reportedly struggled with their marriage for some time and new reports suggest that it was Holmes who decided to finally their 5-year marriage, according to Radar Online.

"Katie just wants to live out of the spotlight of Tom. She wants to focus on her acting career, which has taken a backseat since her marriage," a source close to the situation told RadarOnline.com.

"She is currently filming a movie and has another project lined up and she wants to amp up her career another notch, which she has struggled to do the past few years. Tom was always very vocal about what roles Katie should play," the source added.

Holmes, 33, rose to stardom in 1998 after securing a role as Joey Potter on the hit teen drama series "Dawson's Creek."

Prior to meeting 49-year-old Cruise Holmes had starred in various movies including "Disturbing Behavior," "Teaching Mrs. Tingle," and "Phone Booth." Holmes' acting career began to slow down after she gave birth to her first child, Suri Cruise. Holmes and Cruise's alleged parenting differences eventually took a toll on their marriage, which prompted the recent divorce filing.

"Katie and Tom also have very different parenting views. Katie wants Suri to go to school with other children and have a grounded routine whereas Tom doesn't, he wants her schooled in the same manner as Connor and Isabella were," the source said.

"Tom is nowhere near as strict as Katie is and doesn't believe in disciplining Suri, whereas Katie believes that is important. Tom basically treats Suri as a little adult, however Katie treats her like a six-year-old child, and that causes some major clashes over parenting style," the source added.

Despite having past differences with her parents, Holmes has now reportedly turned to them for advice during what her attorney Jonathan Wolfe described as a "private" time.

Martin and Kathleen Holmes, who are devout Catholics, reportedly objected to their daughter marrying Cruise because of his deep rooted involvement with Scientology. They eventually came around out of fear that Cruise would permanently jeopardize the relationship that they have with Holmes, their youngest child.

"Tom and Katie have an absolute iron-clad pre-nup and Katie doesn't intend to contest any element of it. The only thing to be hammered out will be custody of Suri -- Katie wants primary custody, and she will get it," the source said.

"Katie's father Martin Holmes is an attorney and he is giving advice to his daughter during the divorce proceedings. Katie is relying on her parents now more than ever and they have been her rock," the source added.

Cruise's representative released a statement regarding the estranged couple's divorce after Wolfe confirmed their separation to People magazine.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy," the statement read.
