LG Electronics Debuting OLED HDTV at Consumer Electronics Show 2012

LG Electronics is prepping its upcoming OLED HDTV for a big debut at this year’s edition of the Consumer Electronics Show.

The company will arrive at CES 2012 with its new HDTV in tow. The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) HDTV will be 4-millimeters thick and measure out to 55-inches, as well as weigh 7.5-kilograms. This new television device will also feature 3-D functions and web-based services, along with support from LG’s Triple XD Engine.

The OLED HDTV will also exclude a backlighting mechanism from the final model. LG Electronics currently stands as the world’s 2nd largest TV maker.

James Fishler, senior vice president, marketing and go-to-market operations of LG Electronics USA, spoke to RTTNews.com on the new OLED HDTV. "The OLED TV is the ultimate display device, a culmination of the sophisticated technological advances made by LG," he said.

"This next-generation display will further strengthen LG's position as a true leader and trend-setter of the home entertainment industry. It is the TV of dreams," he added.

OLED technology utilizes organic carbon-based compounds that display red, green or blue light in response to electric currents. OLED TV screens produce sharper, cleaner images, and have ultra fast refresh rates.

They also don’t need a backlight to illuminate the crystals in LCD HDTV's, which means they use considerably less power. They also can fit in thinner TV frames.

Expert Reviews stated that the OLED HDTV "boasts a startling contrast ratio and a refresh rate some one thousand times faster than that of a traditional liquid-crystal HDTV set for zero motion blur."

LG’s OLED HDTV will come at a high price for future consumers. The Wall Street Journal reported that NPD DisplaySearch estimates that it will cost about $8,000 when it finally goes on sale. LG previously said it may even sell its new OLED HDTV during the 2nd half of 2012.

The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show will take place in Las Vegas from Jan. 10-13. The Las Vegas Convention Center will showcase the event.

CES 2012 will feature more than 2,700 global technology companies across 15 major product categories including the latest in audio, automotive electronics, connected home technologies and entertainment.

Sony, Samsung, and Ford are also expected to debut its new products at this highly anticipated tech event.
