Lil Wayne Admits Doctors Told Him To Stop Drinking Syrup

Lil Wayne recently opened up about abusing the use of codeine in a drink called "sizzurp," that some have speculated has caused him health issues earlier this year.

The 30-year-old rapper born Dwayne Carter recently opened to Katie Couric, the host of the morning talk show "Katie" about doctors warning him about his addiction to sizzurp or syrup.
After a series of seizures landed him in the hospital six months ago, the rapper opened up about having to cut the substance out of his life.

"I'm an excessive person," Carter admitted to Couric. "And everything I do is, I kinda do it abundantly… And I was doing it too much."

The rapper recalled his doctor's advice to him that may have saved his life.

"And the doctor kinda told me, 'We can't tell you what to do. You've built everything around you," the rapper recalled his doctor saying. "The only person that probably can tell you what to do is your mom. Everyone else around here, kinda works for you. You know so all we can do is suggest, but I suggest that your mom tell you to stop.'"

While some media sources like TMZ initially reported that the rapper's multiple seizures stemmed from his use of syrup, his industry mentor Bryan "Birdman" Williams, previously refuted those claims.

Instead, Williams said Lil Wayne may have been overworking himself.

"To me, it's how he works. He works around the clock," Birdman told New York City Radio Station Hot 97 after the rapper's health scare. "He's just a hard grinder for this music. But it wasn't nothing about no drugs."

While in the hospital, Lil Wayne received visits from the likes of rappers Drake, Nicki Minaj and NBA star Chris Paul. Singer Usher and rapper T.I. also mentioned Lil Wayne during performances, where they wished him well last March.
