Luigi Mangione: 5 things to know about alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer
3. Back injury and secret agony
Mangione's former roommate in Hawaii, where he lived for a time, claimed that Mangione experienced a back injury that rendered him incapable of dating or sexual intimacy, according to the Times.
Martin explained to the outlet that Mangione's "spine was kind of misaligned," and he complained that "his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve."
Martin also explained that Mangione's injury was afflicting him in more personal ways.
"He knew that dating and being physically intimate with his back condition wasn’t possible," Martin said. "I remember him telling me that, and my heart just breaks."
On Goodreads — a website where users tag the books they have read, are reading or want to read — Mangione expressed interest in several niche books regarding back pain, such as Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery by investigative journalist Cathryn Jakobson Ramin.
Back Mechanic by Dr. Stuart McGill, distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo, was another.
Mangione also used Goodreads to comment on the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber.
"It’s easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies," Mangione wrote. "But it’s simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out."
He also interacted and commented on the works of Aldous Huxley, Tim Urban and Jonathan Haidt.
