NFL Trade Rumors: Broncos Deal Ryan Clady to Jets
The New York Jets may have finally found their new starting left tackle after a successful trade with the Denver Broncos that saw them get Ryan Clady in exchange for a fifth-round pick. At first impression, this deal seems to be meaningless for both squads, but it actually makes a lot of sense.
First off, the Jets suddenly had a hold in the starting left tackle position when veteran D'Brickashaw Ferguson decided to retire, so trading for someone who could fill that spot turns out to be a good decision after all. For the Broncos on the other hand, letting Clady go means they now have a bigger room in the hope of signing a quarterback, and sources are saying that they might finally make a final push for Colin Kaepernick. Also, they're getting a fifth-round pick from the Jets, which by all accounts, is already a great deal considering that they released someone who has been marred with a lot of injuries for the past three years.
According to ESPN, Clady already reported to the team complex to subject himself for a physical last Friday. The same report said that he agreed to a restructured contract the day after, wherein he will be paid $6 million in base salary for a one-year deal, with guaranteed money of $3 million. However, he could actually earn up to $7.5 million on incentives.
Provided he can avoid any injuries next season and remain healthy, there is a good chance he could do more than what the retired Ferguson contributed to this team. He has a distinctive skill set, but the problem is his tendency to be very prone to injuries. Therefore, there is a lot of reward for the Jets in agreeing to this trade, but it also comes with some major risks since they're paying someone who could re-injure himself and miss time once again.
