Nintendo Switch Outsells PS4 and Xbox One in September; Sales Exceed 2 Million

It seems the dominance of Nintendo's flagship console will not be stopped anytime soon.

According to the NPD Group, a market research company that analyzes the sales of different industries including video gaming, the Nintendo Switch continued to stamp its class against the competition in September. The Switch outsold Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One in the U.S, yet again, last month, giving the erstwhile household rivals a serious challenge.

In a Nintendo press release published by Business Wire, the gaming giant topped the sales ladder for the third straight month. It already took the top spot for a total of five times since its launching seven months ago. "Nintendo Switch has already surpassed 2 million units sold in the U.S. alone, and has yet to go through its first holiday shopping season," read the press release.

In the larger scheme of things, Nintendo has also taken a huge share of the pie in terms of total video game hardware sales last month. The NPD report said that the company claimed two-thirds of the total industry sales with the Switch's output combined with that of the Nintendo 3DS family and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Classic Edition.

Gamespot noted, however, that the NPD Group delayed the official release of its September 2017 report due to a "data issue." It is interesting to see if that will impact the total sales and standing of the Nintendo Switch. The research and data analysis firm said that they discovered the problem during their "quality control process." The final data will likely come out early next week.

Meanwhile, Nintendo also made waves in the software side of things. Three Nintendo-exlusive games made it to the top 10, led by "Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle" at number seven. It was followed by "Metroid: Samus Returns" at eight and Switch's launch title "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" at 10th.
