Psy - 'Gangnam Style' is 'Too Popular' and Will End

'I'm Working Hard on A New Single,' Says Rapper

Psy's "Gangnam Style" may be on its last legs, according to the South Korean rapper. Despite the popularity of the song- it has over a billion hits on YouTube- the horse-dancing entertainer revealed he was ready to move on to other songs after performing it yet again for "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve."

Psy and "Gangnam Style" have been everywhere since the single blew up July 15, 2012, immediately going viral with 500,000 YouTube hits that day. Since then, Psy has been invited to perform the song virtually everywhere, although the K-pop vibes and popular dance may not last much longer.

"Being in Times Square on New Year's Eve is already special- it's the biggest stage in the universe- plus it's my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of 'Gangnam Style,'" the 35-year-old told MTV News after bringing in the new year. "I mean, what better way to do it? It's my biggest and most meaningful birthday."

The widespread lasting popularity of the song- actors, musicians, and even President Barack Obama have been seen publically doing the horse dance to the catchy beat- threatens to make the South Korean rapper a 1-hit wonder. Before that happens, however, Psy said he will release something else.

"The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period," he continued. "I'm working hard on a new single right now."

Psy's hard work on his music career seems to already be paying off as the "Gangnam Style" cash rolls in. He recently bought a condo on Los Angeles' Wilshire Boulevard for $1.249 million, according to The Los Angeles Times. The purchase of the 2,776-square-foot pad will help the South Korean settle into the U.S. and his new recording contract with Justin Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun.

"Gangnam Style" will still be a part of Psy's repertoire for now, however. The rapper still has some performances scheduled, and "promo" to do.

"I'm not saying ['Gangnam Style'] is ending on 'Dick Clark'- I still have a lot of invitations to perform it," the rapper told MTV News. "I'll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I've still got to do promo."

"So let me say that in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single," he added.
