Samsung Finally Allows Galaxy S8 Users to Disable Bixby
One of the key features of Samsung's flagship smartphone is the Bixby voice assistant. It was introduced in the hopes of making things easier for the Galaxy S8, and just recently, the Galaxy Note 8 users. The problem, however, is that some users are annoyed of the Bixby button's default settings.
According to a Verge report, Samsung finally listened to their patrons' clamor to customize the button, at least, to a certain extent. The tech giant released an update last Monday that allows users of the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 to keep the Bixby button from launching the Bixby Home.
The update is not yet in full effect on every device, though it is certainly rolling out.
One of the most common complaints from users is that they launch the voice assistant whenever they accidentally press the button. The accidental pressing of the button often happens whenever users adjust their device's volume, which is located above it.
TrustedReviews reported that the option to disable the launching of Bixby can be found in the Bixby settings. Though it does not totally eliminate the feature, it gives the users the option to toggle the Bixby Home screen whenever the button is accidentally pressed.
A few months back, third-party companies launched some tools and apps that gave users the option to remap the Bixby button. These attempts, however, were all shut down by Samsung, as they want the users to maximize the feature and incorporate its use in their daily lives.
TrustedReviews also mentioned that perhaps one of the reasons why some Galaxy S8 users were keen on disabling Bixby is because of the latter's limited functionality. With the Bixby launched first in the U.S. and Korea, the U.K. market, as well as the other regions, was unable to enjoy much of Bixby's functions.
Meanwhile, Samsung is looking to sell more units of the Galaxy Note 8 compared to the Galaxy Note 5. The company's mobile chief Koh Dong-jin confirmed in a recent interview with The Investor that they are eyeing to sell over 11 million units of the phablet.
"The Note 5 sold 11 million units. I think the Note 8 would sell more than that. But the shipments could be adjusted because we still want to sell more Galaxy S8 phones," said Koh.
