Sony Reveals Free October 2017 PS Plus Games for PS4, PS3, Vita

Owners of the PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 3 (PS3), and Vita who are PS Plus subscribers can now enjoy the latest set of games for October, free of charge.

Nintendo announced the lineup of games last Thursday, led by "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" published by Konami. The game follows the footsteps of another "Metal Gear" classic, the "Ground Zeroes," which became a free game in PS Plus back in 2015, reported Gamespot.

Meanwhile, a series of horror games will add some excitement as Halloween approaches. PS4 owners can now download the "Amnesia Collection" developed by Frictional Games. The compilation includes "Amnesia: The Dark Descent" and "A Machine for Pigs."

PS4 and Vita owners can both enjoy puzzler game "Hue" and vertically scrolling fighter plane shooting video game "Sky Force Anniversary" through Cross-Buy. The latter can also be played by PS3 owners, as the game also offers Cross-Buy feature for the older PlayStation console. Other titles available for PS3 owners are pool video game "Hustle Kings" from VooFoo Studios and "Monster Jam Battlegrounds."

The PS4 and rival Nintendo Switch are in a tightly-contested battle in terms of console sales. According to NPD Group, Nintendo's flagship outsold Sony's for the month of August. It was the fourth time in six months that the PS4 yielded the top spot to the Switch, according to BGR. Since the Switch was launched in March, it has taken the top spot in all months to date, except for May and June.

Despite the slip in the sales race, the PS4 still remains the best-selling console for the whole of 2017, thus far. The two were followed by the Xbox One from Microsoft.

It will be interesting to see how the console wars will shape once the holiday season begins. The Nintendo Switch has been struggling to keep their units in stock in different retailers. Microsoft, on the other hand, will bring in a new player in the mix in the form of the Xbox One X come November.
