Spider-Man Comic Saves Wedding of Collector's Daughter
A father wanting to give his daughter the best wedding possible sold his rare Spider-Man comic book to pay for the bills. The comic book, bought for 12 cents in 1963 fetched $7,900 from an online sale.
Richard Schaen, 69, was not sure how he would cover the expenses of his daughter's wedding, but then he remembered he had a box of old comic books. Inside one was a well-kept copy of the "Amazing Spider-Man," the very first book in the series, which he purchased in 1963.
"I gave my daughter a promissory note for the money with a picture of the Spider-Man comic, which we can use to pay for a big part of the catering for her reception," Schaen told The Plain Dealer.
The comic fetched $7,000 after the listing fee, spurring Schaen to begin going through his other comics to see what they are worth.
"I put them away for a rainy day," the collector said. "I still bought a few comics now and then to keep my hand in, but I no longer followed all the series. There are just too many of them. My wife and I talked about it and decided that we would designate a project that needs to be done, like putting a new roof on the house, and we will sell as many comics as necessary to pay for it."
"I have the first issue of 'Daredevil' Comics No. 1 up for auction now, and I think the next to go up will be three of the first six issues of 'The Hulk,'" Schaen said. The "Daredevil" comic ended up selling for $1,600.
Even though the Spider-Man comic brought in a great deal of money, there is one character that holds a special place in Schaen's heart.
"I related to The Hulk because I had a lot of wrath in me. I was picked on as a teenager and wished I could have had the strength of The Hulk," Schaen explained.
