Tim Tebow Wants to Leave Jets? Greg McElroy to Start Sunday

Backup quarterback Tim Tebow may consider placing a request to leave the New York Jets.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez's performance on Monday was poor enough to illicit death threats from fans, who were disappointed by the Jet's 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans. After a 5-turnover performance, coach Rex Ryan decided that it was time to make a change in the lineup.

Ryan decided late Monday night to bench Mark Sanchez for Sunday's game against the Chargers. While it was bad news for Sanchez, Tebow fans who have been calling for more play time all season rejoiced. Their joy, however, came to speedy end on Tuesday when Ryan announced that third-string quarterback Greg McElroy would be the starting quarterback.

Ryan gave no reason as to why he had skipped over Tebow other than a "gut feeling."

"I can answer this question a million ways- frontward, backward, sideways, anything else," Ryan said late Tuesday in a conference call with reporters. "It's my decision and I based it on a gut feeling or whatever. Everything it comes down to is, I believe it's the best decision for our team. That's the only factor that goes into these decisions."

But Tebow fans weren't happy about the call and apparently, Tebow himself may be feeling a little disheartened. Tebow is now considering placing a request to be transferred or leave the team at the end of the season, a source told the New York Daily News.

Tebow has been one of the most popular players in the league, and many fans are frustrated by Ryan's decision. Tebow, who won eight games last season as the Bronco's starting quarterback, has seen little playing time all season. And the reason for keeping him benched had nothing to do injury.

"Tim has been cleared to play for a number of weeks," Ryan told the NY Daily News. "As the weeks went on, he looked better and better. We even ran some Pistol and Wildcat. But this decision is my decision. I'm choosing to go with Greg."
