'True Detective' Season 3 Rumors: Fate of Show Lies With Series Creator Nic Pizzolatto

Despite the relative failure of the second season of "True Detective," HBO still believes in the talent of its creator, Nic Pizzolatto. So big is their trust that according to a report from Variety.com, the cabler has inked an overall deal that would have the creative genius working for the entertainment company until 2018.

According to the publication, the deal puts a slew of new projects from Pizzolatto under consideration. The question however remains: what about the future installments of his more widely-recognized crime anthology franchise, "True Detective?"

As it turns out, the network is currently waiting for Pizzolatto to make his decision about the show's third season. Variety cited their HBO insiders saying that the company is currently considering plans to make some adjustments with the show. These options include him getting a whole new slate of staff writers, having a new show-runner to work with him, or have him have his way again. Regardless of which, he would still serve as an executive producer for the show.

Despite the leeway, Pizzolatto needs to hand in his decision the soonest as possible so that HBO can move on with the production, the sources for the media outlet went on to say.

HBO executive Michael Lombardo previously expressed his desire to see yet another season of TD. During the Television Critics Association summer press tour (via The Hollywood Reporter) earlier this year, he told the press that "[He'd] love to do another season" and that he'd be happy to work with Pizzolatto for a long time.

On top of this, Lombardo defended Season 2 by reiterating the fact that "Nic…is one of the best writers working in television and motion pictures today." For him, "the show ends with as satisfying an end as any show I've seen."

The finale of the Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams-starred TD season raked in an average of 2.71 million, falling short to that of the Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson installment's 3.52 million views.
