It was reported by Sara M. Moniuszko of USA Today that during the various inauguration events, including the swearing-in ceremony, many were wearing the color purple.

This included Vice President Kamala Harris wearing a purple dress on Inauguration Day and first lady Jill Biden wearing the color at the Tuesday evening vigil at the Lincoln Memorial in honor of Americans who died from COVID-19.

Former first lady and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, another prominent figure to don the color on Wednesday, said it was a sign of unity between red and blue states.

"I did wear purple with a purpose because I knew the theme that President Biden was striking was unity. I thought as you combine red and blue, the way that we are divided politically in our country, you get purple," explained Clinton, as reported by USA Today.

"I wanted just to send a bit of a symbolic message that we need to come together."
