Bipartisan church service
The Bidens invited representatives of both elected Democrats and Republicans to attend a church service in advance of the Inauguration, further showcasing the theme of unity.
Held at Washington's Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, attendees of the service included Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., as well as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.
Also present were Kamala Harris, in advance of her being sworn in as the first female vice president, and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, reported The Associated Press.
The Rev. Msgr. W. Ronald Jameson, rector of the cathedral, posted to Twitter a prayer for national unity that was given as part of the Wednesday morning service.
“For the healing of our nation; for a deepened commitment to advance racial justice and to find common ground to serve the common good ... and to live with a spirit of humility and empathy modeled after the life of Jesus … Let us pray,” he tweeted.
