Wearing purple, ‘Amazing Grace,’ few protests: 5 notable things that happened on Inauguration Day
Garth Brooks
As part of the inauguration ceremony, award-winning country music star Garth Brooks sang the first and last verses of the famous 18th century Christian hymn “Amazing Grace.”
After doing so, Brooks then asked both those gathered at the National Mall and viewers watching at home to join him in singing a verse of the hymn, “as one, united.”
Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., remarked following the performance that the hymn was “as close to both poetry and prayer as you can possibly come.”
Previously, Brooks sang at the 2009 inauguration of former President Barack Obama, but declined to perform at the inauguration of former President Donald Trump in 2017, citing schedule issues, according to Billboard.
