GOP debate tackles ‘Rich Men North of Richmond,’ Vivek's experience, Trump's indictments
‘Rich Men North of Richmond’
Near the start of the debate, the program aired a portion of the hit country song “Rich Men North of Richmond” by Oliver Anthony, which included one instance of uncensored profanity.
“The No. 1 song on the Billboard chart is called ‘Rich Men North of Richmond,’” explained McCallum as the audience cheered in response. “His lyrics speak of alienation, of deep frustration with the state of government and of this country.”
When asked why he felt the song was so popular, DeSantis replied that “our country is in decline” and that “this decline is not inevitable” but rather “a choice.”
“We cannot succeed as a country if you are working hard and you can’t afford groceries, a car, or a new home, while Hunter Biden can make hundreds of thousands of dollars on lousy paintings,” DeSantis added.
Christie responded that he largely agreed with DeSantis, adding that “if you asked every one of us up here, that we would agree predominantly with what he just laid out.”
