Casey Anthony Latest News: Media Company Tries to Steal 'Casey Anthony'
Casey Anthony has won another court case. This time against a California media company who wanted to trademark the words “Casey Anthony” – without her permission.
The San Francisco-based company, Grant Media filed a U.S. Trademark application on July 10 in an attempt to secure the rights to use Anthony’s name for entertainment purposes.
The Trademark Office has rejected the request, claiming that Grant Media had no proof of a connection to the 25-year-old, TMZ has reported.
“[Anthony] is not connected with the services sold by the applicant under the mark. Moreover, due to her fame, purchasers would presume a connection between Casey Anthony and the entertainment services,” read the statement of denial.
Sources close to Anthony have also told TMZ that she has no connection to Grant Media. Anthony’s lawyers are ready to take action against anyone else attempting to profit from her name, the sources added.
On July 5, 2011, Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. The “not guilty” verdict ignited a fire of shock and outrage.
Due to death threats, Anthony is currently serving probation for check fraud charges at an undisclosed location in Florida.
In September, Orange County Judge Belvin Perry, who presided over Anthony’s murder trial, ruled that she had to repay $217,000 in costs related to the investigation and disappearance of Caylee.
Perry, who issued the first fine of $97,676.98, increased the reimbursement costs the 25-year-old owed four central Florida law enforcement agencies.
The additional payments came about after the Orange County Sheriff’s Office provided Perry with better-detailed accounts of their costs.
According to Perry, creditors will have to sue Anthony to collect any money she receives from a book deal or the rights to her story. Anthony’s repayment order will be a civil judgment, AP reported.
Judge Perry has also allowed the release of Casey Anthony’s controversial jailhouse video, which had been sealed due its “highly inflammatory” footage.
The video shows Anthony’s response to the news that Caylee’s remains were found in the woods near her home.
