Galaxy Nexus Release Date: HTC Edge to be World's First Quad-Core Smartphone

HTC's upcoming Edge smartphone may be the world's first handset to feature a quad-core processor, according to technology website 9to5 Google.

The Galaxy Nexus, formally known as the Nexus Prime, was originally rumored to be the first smartphone to include a quad-core processor, but during its unveiling it was revealed the Galaxy Nexus will only have a dual-core.

The HTC Edge might take that spot and solidify itself as one of the first smartphones to have a quad-core processor.

Not only will the Edge feature a more powerful processor, but also its screen will trump the Galaxy Nexus' at 4.7-inches compared to the Nexus with 4.65-inch.

HTC plans to make the Edge its new flagship device that will include a 720p display, 1 GB of RAM, 8-megapixel backlit camera, and a AP30 Tegra 3 Nvidia central processing unit, which doubles the processing power of the Rezound.

Other features include Beats by Dre, audio tech, Bluetooth 4.0 and 32 GB of internal memory.

HTC might also debut services HTC Listen, HTC Read, HTC Play and HTC Watch alongside the new Edge smartphone, according to 9to5 Google.

The Edge is expected to launch sometime in the first quarter of 2012, according to technology website PocketNow.

The ASUS Padphone made its debut earlier this year.

The Padphone will also include a quad-core processor and should hit stores sometime next year.

ASUS' Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet is another device that will have a quad-core processor.

Apple's iPhone 5 is also expected to have a quad-core chip that is currently being produced by Samsung, according to the latest rumors.

The iPhone 5 should launch sometime in 2012 making next year the time when quad-core technology will make its mark in the industry by being implemented into various devices.
