iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Could Feature Indestructible Screens With the Addition of Gorilla Glass 2
For Apple fans tired of dropping their iPhones, iPads and iPods, only to pick them up and find their displays shattered, Corning. Inc may be introducing the solution to that problem at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
The company announced its plans earlier today to unveil Gorilla Glass 2, the follow up to the original Gorilla Glass that is a damage resistant cover glass found on most of today’s tablets and smartphones at CES 2012 in Las Vegas next week.
There is a strong possibility that this damage resistant glass used to manufacture displays could be used for the next generation iPhone and iPad.
Corning is a New York based company that will have its own booth at CES where is plans to showcase Gorilla Glass 2.
“A key feature of Corning’s CES exposure will be the introduction of Corning Gorilla Glass 2, the next generation of the popular, damage-resistant cover glass for consumer electronic devices,” read a recent press release by the company.
The original Gorilla Glass has allowed Corning.Inc to enjoy tremendous success with countless handset and tablet makers utilizing the material in order to create damage resistant displays.
“Handset and tablet device manufacturers are clearly driving towards higher functionality from thinner designs,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager of Corning Specialty Materials. “Corning’s latest innovation in Gorilla Glass technology is very well positioned to meet these challenges and enable broader touch technology presentation.”
Corning will allow consumers who attend CES to test out the new Gorilla Glass in its booth. Steiner describes it as outstanding, damage resistant, flexible, ultra thin and tough.
The new glass will more than likely be featured in devices coming out later on in the year since it is being introduced this month. Upcoming handsets it could be used for include the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3, that are arguably the two hottest smartphones on the market.
