Kim Kardashian Divorce: Star Must Pay $2M to Keep Her Engagement Ring
Kim Kardashian will have to pay former-husband Kris Humphries to keep her famously expensive engagement ring, according to reports.
The 20.5-carat diamond ring in question was mentioned in a clause in the couple’s prenuptial agreement, according to TMZ. The clause allows Kardashian to buy the ring from Humphries for the original purchase price in the event the couple files for divorce.
It is unclear how much Kardashian, or indeed whether she will, pay Humphries to keep the ring.
The engagement ring is estimated to be worth around $2 million, TMZ reported.
The ring has been a source of controversy since the couple announced they were divorcing after just 72 days of marriage.
Kris Jenner, Kardashian’s mother, said the ring should be Kardashian’s to keep, according to reports.
“It’s a gift. You keep a gift,” Jenner said in a Good Morning America interview.
The marriage has been called into question after its brevity and the speculation it was an attempt to garner publicity and money from the wedding.
Kardashian was reported to have made an estimated $10 million from her wedding.
Jenner denies the claim vehemently.
“Kim’s dream (was) to get married and have babies, and raise a family,” Jenner said. “That’s all she’s ever wanted.”
Kardashian denied the rumors on her blog.
"I am trying not to read all the different media reports but it's hard not to see all the negative ones," Kardashian wrote. "First and foremost, I married for love. I can't believe I even have to defend this. I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show!"
It is unclear why the couple divorced after fewer than three months of marriage.
Divorce records show Kardashian cited “irreconcilable differences” when she filed for divorce form Humphries.
