National S'mores Day Celebrated; Sweet Treat With Marshmallow, Chocolate, Crackers
This year National S'mores Day has arrived on Friday with people everywhere celebrating their favorite sweet, sticky treat.
Each year on Aug. 10 families gather around a campfire and enjoy the special dessert. The traditional nighttime campfire treat can be made with just three simple ingredients; marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers.
Typically, making the treat begins with roasting the marshmallow by the fire. This can be done by placing the marshmallow on the end of a stick, or metal rods specifically manufactured for the task, which are available in some stores.
Then the camper assembles the marshmallow atop the graham cracker along with a layer of chocolate, before placing another graham cracker on top, forming a sandwich.
It is unknown where S'more's name originated, but it is believed that the snack's name is a contraction of the phrase "some more."
The recipe is credited to Loretta Scott Crew, a Girl Scouts leader who allegedly made the treat by the campfire for the Scouts.
While the classic marshmallow combination is most frequently enjoyed fireside, many other s'more-inspired snacks have originated containing the same ingredients. Pop Tarts offers a S'more flavor where chocolate and marshmallow fill the breakfast tart, and several cookies boast the winning combination.
Moreover, the classic combination of S'mores has seen additional flavors such as orange, banana, caramel and candy toppings. Other variations of the recipe include whipping ingredients together and making cakes, cookies, and pies with them.
Twitter users have posted their fondness for the treat on National S'mores Day Friday.
"Pull up a chair, going to roast some marshmallows, make Smores," posted Bernard.
Magnolia Bakery wrote on their Twitter account, "It's national s'mores day! Celebrate the gooey goodness by stopping by any of our stores to get a s'mores cupcake."
"We think they're best with a Reese's Dark Peanut Butter Cup or a couple of Rolos," posted Frances of the traditional treat.
Michael wrote, "They are awesome… sweet and decadent."
