Nintendo Wii U to Feature Android OS?
Nintendo is now rumored to be integrating Google's Android operating system into its next generation gaming console, the Wii U.
This news originated from Twitter where high level Android software developers were communicating with Nintendo over the matter. However, what was said in those tweets has not yet surfaced on the internet, according to DroidGamers.com.
Nintendo has not been a backer of Android OS in the past, so it would be interesting and surprising if this rumor proves to be true.
The rumor also claims that Nintendo is not in the process or integrating Android into its hardware, but has already done it.
The Wii U is expected to make its debut at E3 2012. It is the follow up device to the successful Nintendo Wii that launched back in 2006.
The Wii U will feature a new tablet controller that allows players to stream their games onto the remote's 6.2-inch screen once their television is turned off.
The Telegraph published an article in January that said that Nintendo would create an app store for the Wii U console and its unique controller that would go "far beyond" anything that is currently available on the Wii and DSi systems.
Partnering up with Google would allow Nintendo to have the resources to perform this task and outdo its competitors, Sony and Microsoft.
But more importantly, Nintendo's use of Android would allow the company to better compete with its newest "thorn in the flesh," the iPhone who has stolen a large amount of the video game giant's handheld business.
Android currently dominates the software market for smartphones and could potentially help Nintendo gain some of these gamers back.
This Wii U is expected to launch in the second half of 2012.
