Oprah Winfrey Reveals Why She Has No Children
Oprah Winfrey, the 59-year-old media maven, recently revealed how she feels about never having children.
Winfrey was recently honored by The Hollywood Reporter and spoke to the publication about how she and her best friend Gayle King had opposing views about parenthood in their youth.
"Gayle (now a mother of two) was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade Home Ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children. While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King," Winfrey told THR. "If I had kids, my kids would hate me. They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them."
Winfrey has been candid about her lifestyle choices in the past and has also spoken about why she does not have a traditional view about marriage. The media maven appeared on Bravo TV's "Watch What Happens Live" with host Andy Cohen earlier this year.
When questioned about her longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham, who has been her partner for nearly 30 years, Winfrey admitted that she is not rushing to walk down the aisle.
"I don't know if I want to do that. You know why," she questioned Cohen. "It's really good right now. And when you add that 'wife' thing, then it's too much … I was at Tina's [Turner] wedding and she finally did it."
Although the couple was engaged in 1992, Winfrey told People magazine that she would rather have a spiritual union with Graham.
"We're like an old married couple," she told People.
The media maven admitted that Graham does not have the easiest job, dating one of the most successful women in the broadcast journalism field.
"I've seen people crawl over him, push him aside," she told People. "He's learned how to navigate that. That takes a confident man. That embodies who he is."
