Orioles' Adam Jones Says Banana was Thrown by Fan - Vows to Leave Twitter
MLB outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles, Adam Jones, was the victim of a racist act during Sunday's game against the San Francisco Giants.
During the bottom of the ninth inning of the Orioles 10-2 route of the Giants, a fan from the stands threw a banana at Jones.
Jones is an African-American ballplayer and the stigma of the thrown piece of fruit carries way more history than it should, harkening back to America's deep racist past that looked down upon the black community.
The ballplayer made no mention of the incident after the game at a press conference, however, he took to Twitter to vent his frustration.
"I want to thank whatever [expletive] threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jacka**" he Tweeted.
To Jones' surprise and disgust, many people Tweeted him back defending the fan who threw the object toward him in ignorance.
"I love how some ppl are defending the actions by someone today. Shows how u really are also. All good wit me. I just #StayHungry," he Tweeted. "Good chance this means I get off social media soon."
Jones actively engages with his 129,000 Twitter followers, and is known as one of the "good guys" in baseball concerning fan interaction.
According to Yahoo sports, the Giants will be investigating the matter by looking at surveillance tapes and questioning security. They are also hoping a fan who saw something steps forward.
The incident occurred almost directly after Jones hit a three run homer in the top of the ninth inning.
The 28-year-old has 24 homeruns and 85 RBI's, as well as an impressive .304 batting average.
Just last week a statue of the legendary color barrier breaking baseball player Jackie Robinson was vandalized with Hitler references and racial slurs.
