Paz de la Huerta Axed From 'Boardwalk Empire'

HBO has decided not to renew a contract with "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta.

The 27-year-old actress portrayed Lucy Danziger in the three seasons of HBO's hit television series. The series' producers chose not to accept de la Huerta's contract option leaving her character's fate uncertain in the upcoming third season, reported TVLine on Wednesday.

On the show, Danziger is the former love of central character Nucky Thompson, and the mother of the detective Nelson Van Alden's child. At the end of the second season, Danziger abandoned her child as the character slipped into a deep depression.

Although it is not clear what will happen to de la Huerta's character, Van Alden's relocation to Cicero, Illinois with his daughter insinuates that he will have little contact with Danziger and that she will no longer appear in the series.

Native to New York City, de la Huerta has appeared in pop culture. Paparazzi footage of her falling down in street while intoxicated is included in Lana del Rey's music video for "Video Games."

"Boardwalk Empire" premiered in 2010 and was immediately renewed for a second season. The Emmy Award-nominated and critically acclaimed series is well known for its visual style and historical accuracy. The show sees producers such as award winning director Martin Scorsese, actor Mark Wahlberg, Tim Van Patten, and Stephen Levinson.

Golden Globe-winning actor Steve Buscemi portrays the series' protagonist, based on "Nucky" Johnson, and plays a corrupt Atlantic City politician who rules the town during the Prohibition era. The actor also received two SAG awards for his role on the show.

Also ahead of season three the series bid actor Michael Pitt farewell. His character, James "Jimmy" Darmody, was killed off.

During the SAG awards last month, Buscemi said during his award acceptance speech, "To all the Michael Pitt fans, I know, I'm sorry!"

The last minutes of the season two finale also killed off characters portrayed by actors Aleksa Palladino and Dabney Coleman.
