Prince William and Kate Middleton: Duchess' Diet Unhealthy?

The popular “Dukan Diet” rumored to be the reason for Kate Middleton’s slim Royal Wedding figure, is now under fire by the British Dietetic Association.

The protein-based diet became popular after Carole Middleton, Kate’s mother, told a reporter that she and her daughter used it to lose weight, ABC News reported. However, no confirmations about the diet were received from Buckingham palace.

However, the BDA named the craze one of the worst to follow in the new year saying that it has 'absolutely no solid science behind it at all'.

While the diet cuts out various food groups in phases, the BDA calls the method crazy.

“This diet is so confusing, very rigid, full of very French foods that most Brits would run a mile from like rabbit and offal, and even Dr Dukan himself warns of the associated problems like lack of energy, constipation and bad breath,” the BDA said.

French doctor Pierre Dukan, who said it has worked for French women who did not want to exercise in excess or limit what they ate, created the diet.

The Hospital Group released a statement saying that there are no tricks to healthy weight loss.

“The key to weight loss is in sensible portion sizes and a healthy mix of food groups,” The Hospital Group wrote on their website. “We recommend using a smaller plate, which should be ¼ protein, ¼ carbohydrate and ½ vegetables. We also recommend increasing activity, which does become easier as you lose weight.”

Despite the backlash from medical professionals, the French based diet is working to expand in the U.S. Nicolas Holleville, managing director of the Dukan Diet’s U.S. office, spoke about efforts the company is making to expand.

"The Dukan Diet has only recently come to the U.S., and we are looking to Crenshaw Communications to help us build on our early success," Holleville said. "Crenshaw certainly brings relevant experience, as well as a creative team who is genuinely enthusiastic about the Dukan Diet."
