Pepsi's decision to create the new flavor originates from the latest trend in Japan to sprinkle salt on a fresh piece of watermelon before eating it. The red-colored drink will hit shelves on July 24.

The flavor is not the first unusual blend of ingredients to hit the Japanese market. Pepsi White offers consumers soda mixed with yogurt, as well as Pepsi Pink, which boasted a strawberry milk taste.

Also, Coca-Cola in Japan offers a healthy alternative soda called The Wellness. The drink is clear and flavorless, and is targeted toward dieters.

In the U.S., consumers may choose beverage flavors including a Bacon-flavored soda and a Turkey and Gravy flavor from the Jones Soda Company, Dr. Brown's Celery Soda.

Unusual flavors of the American variety also include Buffalo Wing, Peanut Butter and Jelly soda, and Sweet Corn soda from Lester's Fixins. The company is well known for their old fashioned yet fun candy and soda shops.

Also, Many American fast food restaurants are well known for their unusual offerings. Jack in the Box recently announced its Bacon Milkshake, which pairs the creamy treat with the smoky breakfast favorite.

Similarly, Burger King tested the Bacon Sundae which came complete with ice cream, chocolate, caramel, and a strip of bacon, while Denny's Maple Bacon Sundae remains a popular favorite today.
