Samsung Galaxy S3: First Smartphone With Wireless Charging

The Samsung Galaxy S3 could be the first smartphone to feature wireless charging, according to a Korean publication known as DDaily.

It stated that Samsung's next-generation Galaxy device could lead the way for all smartphones to lose the wire and fully embrace the new technology.

Smartphone owners can now give their phone that capability by purchasing a replacement rear cover and hacking in a inductive charging coil. But there will be no need for that on the Galaxy S3, according to DDaily's anonymous source, who claims that wireless charging will come stocked with the device.

This would not be the first time that Samsung would be the first to usher in new technology. The company implemented its Kies Air desktop software that is used for wirelessly syncing devices, and gave the Galaxy S2 an MHL port.

The webOS Palm Pre is one of the only devices on the market to feature inductive charging.

The publication mentioned that Samsung's Galaxy device may not have to physically touch the charging surface in order to acquire power. It also states that Samsung will apply its own proprietary, patented charging method rather than the similar Fulton eCoupled method that was shown at CES.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is expected to launch sometime before the summer.

Other rumored features on the device include a quad-core processor, 4G LTE connectivity, a ceramic body, Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich and a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED high definition display.

Samsung was originally expected to unveil the device at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. However, those plans were changed due to the company's desire to have the reveal and actual launch take place much closer together.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is one the world's bestselling Android smartphones. Samsung uses the Galaxy line to directly compete with Apple's iPhone. So the S3 will be built to go up against the new iPhone.
