  The Church of England and "Roman Catholic bishops of England and Wales" have both formally objected to the government's proposal to allow gay marriages. Despite the strong opposition of some lawmakers in Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party, he is still backing a proposal to permit civil marriages for gay couples.

  As many as 100 people are feared dead in two Northern Afghanistan earthquakes—one a 5.4 magnitude quake, followed by a 5.7 one. They caused a landslide that buried 20 houses in the Hindu Jush region. Both quakes were felt as far as 160 kilometers away in the Afghan capital, Kabul, where buildings shook.

  Creationism is gaining ground in South Korea. Efforts to challenge and even remove the theory of evolution from the school system in South Korea have been gaining ground after a petition last month seeking to make textbook changes. The South Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has now revealed that publishers will start producing revised editions of textbooks without examples of evolution. Christians in South Korea are still a minority but are rising in numbers.

  A coalition of groups seeking to overturn Washington State's same-sex marriage law received twice as many signatures needed to have a referendum in November. "Preserve Marriage Washington" collected about 242,000 signatures.

  Today is the deadline for Egypt's political parties to finalize the formation a100-member panel to write a new constitution. Egypt's ruling military council issued an ultimatum, stating if the deadline isn't met, it will draw up its own blueprint. The process has been deadlocked since the Islamist-dominated parliament tried to stack parliament with its own people, leading to a walkout by secular and liberal members and the disbanding of the panel by a court order.

  Former Liberian president Charles Taylor has been sentenced to 50 years in jail by the Special Court for Sierra Leone at The Hague. Prosecutors wanted 80 years. He was convicted of aiding in atrocious war crimes. His sentence will likely be served in British jail since it is the only country willing to house him.
