Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher Divorce: Actress Cites 'Sacred' Values and Vows
'Two and a Half Men' Actor Says Marriage is Difficult; Did He Cheat?
It seems that only yesterday fans were raging about Kim Kardashian's divorce, and already another attention-grabbing celebrity divorce is under way, as Demi Moore announced late Thursday that she is leaving her husband of six years, actor and TV personality Ashton Kutcher.
"As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life," Moore said in a statement she released Thursday. "This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."
Soon after Moore’s announcement Kutcher took to his Twitter account to say: "I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi."
He added: "Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
The pair was married on Sept. 24, 2005, after having dated since 2003, but their relationship hit the rocks recently when news emerged of Kutcher's alleged affair with 22-year-old Sara Leal in San Diego, Calif.
Many observers confirm that the married couple really started attracting the public’s attention after they’ve both created Twitter accounts and were their active users. Especially Kutcher, who was one of the first recognizable personalities to use Twitter for publicity and branding, and was for a long time the person with the largest amount on followers on that social network, after he won a race with CNN.
Moore’s Twitter name is @MrsKutcher. Thursday, Kutcher (@aplusk) unfollowed Moore on Twitter. Fans wonder if Moore will keep her Twitter name.
"It's easy to forget that nobody really cared about Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher a few years ago," Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franish writes. "Then they joined Twitter. And here you have to remember that - as with so many great and terrible inventions throughout human history - Twitter was not supposed to be what it has become."
Franish claims that Twitter actually made Kutcher into a celebrity; many would add: together with being married to Demi Moore, as the male actor was nowhere near the level of fame of the star of "Ghost."
Media outlets began rumors about what kind of divorce settlement would emerge between the ex-couple as they have an estimated $290 million fortune.
This will be Demi Moore's third divorce. It will be the first time for Kutcher. Moore is 49 years old and Kutcher is 33.
