iPhone 5 Release Date: Will the Next iPhone be the iPhone 6?
As the release of the iPhone 4S quickly approaches, many are still anticipating the eventual release of the iPhone 5 that they were expecting in place of the 4S.
Commentators have projected the release of what would be the sixth-generation iPhone to be between late-2012 and mid-2013, but many are beginning to wonder whether it will be called the iPhone 5 or the "iPhone 6."
The Christian Post previously reported on Apple's decision to forgo making an "iPhone 2" and opting to call its second-generation smartphone the iPhone 3G, which was named for the network on which is runs.
Rumors indicate that the iPhone 4S was dedicated to the late Steve Jobs, co-founder and former CEO of Apple, detailing that the name can be read as "iPhone 4 Steve."
As the iPhone 4S stands as the fifth-generation of the iPhone line, many feel the most appropriate name for the next iPhone would be the iPhone 6, in order to match up with its order in the iPhone family.
However, as all of Apple's energy is now going into the iPhone 4S, there is no indication of the company's plans for future products.
After his death on Oct. 5, the Daily Mail reported that Jobs has supposedly left behind a legacy of up to four years of plans for new models of all the products in the Apple family, including MacBooks, iPods, iPads and iPhones.
Despite having resigned as CEO of Apple on Aug. 24, Jobs remained on the company's board of directors.
Tim Cook succeeded Jobs as CEO after serving as acting CEO several times during Jobs’ illnesses.
Cook and Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller unveiled the iPhone 4S at Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" media event on Oct. 4.
The phone was not received well initially as Apple enthusiasts had been hoping and speculating about an iPhone 5 for several months preceding the launch.
However, interest in the iPhone 4S has peaked as the latest Apple smartphone quickly sold out of pre-orders, selling over 1 million pre-orders in 24-hours beginning on Oct. 7.
