Who has Trump picked for his cabinet? Here are 9 of his nominees
Marco Rubio
In an X post Wednesday, Trump announced Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., as his pick to serve as secretary of state. First elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Rubio emerged as one of Trump’s top rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016. After a contentious and at times bitter campaign, Trump and Rubio became allies after the latter dropped out and ran for reelection to the Senate. Rubio was reelected by a landslide margin in 2022.
Trump expressed confidence that Rubio “will be a strong Advocate for our Nation, a true friend to our Allies, and a fearless Warrior who will never back down to our adversaries.” He added, “I look forward to working with Marco to make America, and the World, Safe and Great Again!”
Rubio’s selection as secretary of state appears likely to receive bipartisan support. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., wrote an X post in response to Rubio’s anticipated nomination indicating he would support his colleague’s confirmation: “Unsurprisingly, the other team’s pick will have political differences than my own. That being said, my colleague @SenMarcoRubio is a strong choice and I look forward to voting for his confirmation.”
Should the Senate confirm Rubio as expected, that would leave his Florida Senate seat vacant. The state’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis would appoint a replacement to fill the vacancy until a special election can take place in November 2026, concurrent with the 2026 midterm elections. The winner of that election will finish out the remainder of Rubio’s term, scheduled to expire in 2029.
