iPad Mini 2 Release Date Coming Soon, Device to Feature A7X Chip
The iPad mini 2 release date is expected to fall somewhere in Q4 2013, according to a recent research note by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The report also revealed that both the fifth-generation full-sized iPad and iPad mini 2 will come with Apple's new A7X chip. This is a significant upgrade for the smaller model that used an A5 in the original version. The chip will also help support the Retina display that will be found in both new models.
Kuo predicts that component shipments for the devices will ramp up towards the end of this quarter with mass production for the device gearing up in the fourth quarter. This falls in line with previous rumors regarding a fall launch for both tablets.
He originally believed that Apple was going to release the iPad mini 2 in early 2014, but now says Apple has sped up its development in order to compete with other small high-resolution tablets hitting the market. The main additions to the mini tablet will be the Retina display and new processor.
The report also touches on a separate iPad mini model that will launch in the beginning of next year. This will be an upgrade from the current model as it will pack an A6 processor over the A5; however, it will not come with a Retina display.
Kuo supports many of the recent rumors that point to the fifth-gen full sized iPad coming with the smaller form factor. However, it will be a challenge for Apple to produce the device with its new iPad mini-like design.
Apple is holding a major media event on Sept. 10 where the next-gen iPhone is expected to be introduced. The new iPad mini and fifth-gen iPad could also end up making an appearance.
