'Kate Middleton Not a Style Icon,' Say New York Fashion Week Experts
Kate Middleton has continued to attract huge media attention wherever she goes since being propelled to the limelight by her marriage to Prince William.
Many people consider Kate Middleton as a fashion icon who sets trends in the fashion arena. With many magazines opting for her glamorous image to grace their covers and stores selling out items worn by Kate, fashion experts have generally praised her.
However, fashion experts in New York have now come out dismissing her as fashion shy and one who only follows what others are wearing.
“She is stylish, but she’s not setting trends, she’s following trends,” said Greg Andrews, a director of fashion at Nordstrom, according to The Daily Mail. “If you take Kate out of the Royal Family, put her on a street in New York, you wouldn’t look at her twice. She’s a beautiful woman, but she blends into a crowd.”
One journalist says the public is obsessed with what the Duchess of Cambridge wears so anything is likely to become a hit due to her royal status.
Elle fashion news director Anne Slowey said, “Is she a style icon of the likes of a Kate Moss? Absolutely not. Is she in the public eye? Are people going to become obsessed with everything she wears regardless of what it is? Yes.”
Ken Downing, another fashion director for high-end department store Neiman Marcus, said the so called “Kate effect” would not stand the test of time.
